The Need for Home Security Systems

April 25, 2013 3183 views

If you took a look at home security statistics, you may be very surprised at the results. In the United States, more than 2 million homes are burglarized every year. In nearly half of those burglaries, thieves enter the homes through windows or doors that are unlocked. Many homeowners take the time to lock up their homes tight when they are not at home or at night but even then, burglars will still often gain access.

A home that is completely without any sort of home security system in place is nearly 300 percent more likely to be targeted for robbery. This makes securing your home and your family essential. There are a number of home security systems on the market that can help you to avoid being one of these statistics. Many of these systems offer complete protection from burglaries as well as fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and other potential risks.

Further studies show that only about 17 percent of all homes in the United States are currently protected by a home security system. Given the fact that a home is invaded every 13 seconds, homeowners should learn and understand the benefits of having a home security system installed. Aside from the obvious benefits of protecting your home and family from break-ins, you should also note that home insurance providers typically offer discounts of up to 20 percent for homes that do have security systems installed.

Burglars tend to avoid homes where security systems are in place. They normally target homes in the daytime while the occupants are at work or school and use a simple process for selection. They choose homes that are unoccupied and offer the greatest amount of cover for their escape. This means that homes in rural areas and those that are well shaded by trees and other cover are often the target of home invasions.

In order to avoid being the victim of a home invasion, you have to make the target a bit harder. It is essential that you learn ways of protecting your home. Burglars will typically avoid a home that is too difficult to enter. This means locking all doors and windows and keeping a home security system turned on at all times when you are away and when you are sleeping. Solid core or metal entry doors should be used and heavy deadbolts are recommended to deter would-be robbers.

Your windows should always be locked when you are not at home and they should all have a secondary locking device to make them harder to enter even when they are locked. If your windows are opened, you should ensure that the opening is small enough that no one could reach through it and unlock it for easy entry.

If you want to avoid being victimized, it is essential that you learn how to protect your home. Take the time to research your options regarding home security systems and learn other ways of ensuring that your home and your family are safe from burglary.
